Sentence auction assessment aims to support the ‘aims of education’, ‘knowledge age essentials’, ‘21st Century Pedagogy’ and assessments’ types. This essay will evaluate how this assessment achieves those (rationale).
Aims of education Sentence Auction assessment take a place on engaging the students with a communicative task that supports their learning in groups. Group work enriches the learning environment to build the students’ confidence to go out to the world and share their thoughts (Thornbury, 1999). Through sharing the traffic jam situation, students will focus on grammar and correct vocabulary to show meaningful sentences. Harmer (2001), mentions that learners who involve in realistic interaction with their peers can handle the future life pretty well.Even though, group work takes a place on this assessment, but there was a personal fulfillment on providing each student with different task. For example, one of them say the sentence, one of them deciding how much to spend, etc. Individualized learning in the group and distribute roles will keep them busy and focused. It encourages the students as well to think wisely, while they are thinking on how much to bid on each sentence. Therefore, this will result on the future to handle a real auction and be responsible of their own biddings. Moreover, this will support their own future economy status to decide how much to spend on what. The assessment services the civic and economy on having freedom of their own actions with deciding to spend or not on each bidding.
Knowledge Age Essentials
Students will work collaboratively and each one has a rule to bid on each sentence. This will examine their own communicative skill to be able to know that everyone in the group is responsible. Therefore, each member will learn that communication means working to produce an excellent product, and it is basically a team work. Furthermore, students will illustrate how much they will lose if they spend much on this sentence, and what if it is wrong. This will enhance their self-reliance to learn for their long term life not just for that moment.
21st Century Pedagogy
Technology Skills will be applied through having the sentences on a PowerPoint, so the students can use the smart board to correct the wrong sentences. Without a doubt, using information, Communications and Technology (ICT) supports the learning to be much easier and to get the students ready to use it in the future. There is big evidence that students get Blooms Taxonomy skills; low levels. In the beginning of understanding each sentence’s form, and check out their prior knowledge about the correct grammar. Then they will analyze and evaluate each sentence’s form while they are bidding. As a result, they will move from low level of thinking to higher ones to enhance the deep thinking. Giving the students the wrong sentences to figure them out is a very sufficient to deal with nowadays, because it engages the students with a problem that they need to solve by themselves with reliance on the money spend on each time. Assessments
This assessment covers some types of assessments. Sentence auction is a divergent type because it doesn’t stick on one answer, because every student will got different answer, but at the end they will figure out the correct one. Sentence auction is a informal formative assessment because I will provide some oral feedback to the whole class, and for each group specifically. I will use the smart board to let the students correct the wrong mistakes, which will encourage them to do their best to get them right. Giving oral feedback during formative assessments showed a big difference on the students’ levels (Airasian and Russell, 2008). Moreover, It is continues type of assessments because I am going to reteach them the grammar again, and I will work on assessing them individually to find out the difference. Giving an individual feedback is the most useful for the students to be aware of their own needs Airasian and Russell, 2008).
